Limitations of APSC
I’ve noticed the last few days that the R7 does not track very well in heavy fog & very low light situations. Especially in the dense fog, the contrast based autofocus is not able to differentiate targets easily and it makes tracking challenging. I’ve had to switch to manual a few times and that doesn’t really work on a moving animal. Over half the shots are blurry and out of focus.
I guess everyone goes full frame eventually. I’ve tried to stay away from full frame as I really enjoy the 1.6x crop of the APSC. That helps with wildlife and makes my 100-400 and 200-800 have that much more reach. Also, the higher megapixel count on the R7 means more pixels are on target than vs a full frame IF the image requires cropping.
Might have to go for a Canon R5 MK2 on Black Friday this year, or look at buying the Canon R7 MK2 thats releasing in 2026. I heard they improved the autofocus on the MK2 R7.
Gear acquisition syndrome (GAS) is a real problem.
To buy a full frame 6k camera just because of a few foggy days seems insane, but thats also a part of the hobby. You dont NEED a new camera, you WANT a new camera.
